There’s no single best month to ski Queenstown. Early winter brings the excitement of opening season, July is popular with families during the school holidays, August sits at the heart of winter, and September brings long sunny days, big powder dumps and spring skiing.

May - June
Winter Starts Here
Winter starts early at Coronet Peak, with a limited offering typically available from late May. Thanks to its Snow Factory, Coronet Peak can produce snow in warmer temperatures, allowing sightseeing, sledding and beginner conveyor carpets to get underway before the main ski season begins.
Coronet Peak and The Remarkables typically open for skiing in June, with exact dates and available terrain dependent on mountain and snow conditions.
June is a great time to visit if you want to experience the start of winter and ski before the busiest school holiday period. Early-season conditions can be more variable, with snowmaking helping establish key trails alongside natural snowfall as the season gets underway.
July
School Holiday Skiing
July is one of the most popular times to ski Queenstown. Winter is well underway, both mountains are typically operating their winter terrain and Queenstown is buzzing with visitors.
It’s also when New Zealand and Australian school holiday periods can overlap, making July particularly popular with families travelling across the Tasman. If you're planning a July ski holiday, booking accommodation, lift passes, lessons, rentals and transport early is a good idea.
For families, the lively winter atmosphere and range of ski school options make July an appealing time to visit, but expect greater demand during school holiday weeks.
August
Prime Winter Skiing
August sits right in the heart of the Queenstown ski season. By this point, the mountains have had the chance to build their snow base, making it a popular month for skiers and snowboarders looking to explore more of the mountain.
Compared with the July school holiday period, August can also be a good option for travellers with more flexibility around when they visit.
Of course, snowfall is never guaranteed. Conditions change throughout the season and from one mountain day to the next, so keep an eye on the snow reports and forecasts during your stay.
September - Early October
Spring Skiing In Queenstown
September brings spring to the mountains, with longer days, warmer temperatures and plenty of skiing still to enjoy.
Spring conditions can change throughout the day. Mornings may start firm before the snow softens as temperatures rise, making timing part of the fun of a spring ski day.
September is a great choice if you like sunny laps, a more relaxed mountain atmosphere and combining skiing with everything else Queenstown has to offer. It can also be a good option for families travelling outside the peak July period.
